Fiberglass Pools – Factors to Consider Before You Dive In

 In Fiberglass Pools

Have you been considering a pool for a while but just couldn’t decide what type of pool you wanted?  If you’ve researched the different types available, you probably noticed that fiberglass pools have become a popular choice. Although they have been around since the 1950s, they have evolved since then. Today’s fiberglass pool is more durable and customizable than its predecessors. Understanding how the pools are constructed and the options available can help you choose a pool you and your family can enjoy for years to come. Let’s address some of the most common concerns when choosing a pool.

Pool Construction

Fiberglass pool construction is a multi-step process done in a manufacturing facility. The first step is to spray the mold with gelcoat. The gelcoat layer is where the color of your pool is determined. Then, two separate layers of chopped fiberglass are applied – the first with vinyl ester resin and the second with polyester resin. Next, woven fiberglass is applied to stress points for additional strength, and honeycomb ‘ribs’ are applied to support the side walls. The final layer of fiberglass is applied with polyester resin and the pool is left to cure in the mold. Once the pool has thoroughly cured, it is removed from the mold, and any excess fiberglass is cut away. This multi-layer process makes fiberglass pools extremely strong and durable.

Pool Shapes and Sizes

While fiberglass pools do come in various shapes and sizes, these are limited to some degree by the manufacturing and transportation process. The most common fiberglass shapes are:

  • Freeform – This shape has no straight lines or sharp angles. Freeform designs can vary depending on the manufacturer.
  • Rectangle – This is a linear shape with straight lines and sharp corners.
  • Kidney – This is an elongated oval shape with a concave curve or indentation on one side.
  • Roman – This is a rectangle with a half circle at each end of the pool.

The transporting of a fiberglass pool limits how large it can be. On average, the largest a pool can be to comply with highway or municipal restrictions is 16 by 40 feet. However, they are available in a variety of sizes smaller than that. They can be as small as 10 feet by 20 feet. Pool sizes, like shapes, will vary depending on the manufacturer.

Customization

Many homeowners assume that because fiberglass pools are prefabricated, there is little opportunity for customization. This simply isn’t true. Customization begins with choosing a shape and size that compliments your existing landscape. If your home is new construction, you can tailor your landscape around your pool. As previously mentioned, the initial layer of gelcoat in the manufacturing process will contain the color of your choice. Waterfall features, underwater lighting, swim jets, and more can be added to further customize your fiberglass pool. Outside the pool, there are a variety of features that can add to the custom design. The waterline tile, the surrounding patio, fencing, and the outdoor features that lie in its perimeter – all of these things help to make your backyard an oasis that is like no other.

How Much Does a Fiberglass Pool Cost?

The answer to this question can vary greatly depending on the pool you choose, the specifics of the installation, and the custom features you add. On average, the initial expense not including any extra features can cost between $45,000 to $85,000. However, this is just a ballpark estimate.
