How to Preserve Your Hardscaping

Deciding to hardscape your property is a large investment which makes it even more important to take the correct precautions to preserve your hardscaping once the pavers are laid.

New Jersey isn’t known for having mild winters, and we at David Ash are committed to helping you through this winter worry-free and with no damage done to your property. When installing your pavers, they are also sealed  to help protect  and preserve your hardscaping  from weathering. However, there are a few other tricks to keeping them protected through the cold months and in great condition.

You may not plan to move anytime soon, if at all, but you want to keep your hardscape in great condition not only for your guests but also for your own peace of mind. This involves regular maintenance of your pavers throughout the year.

Clear the area

Make sure to regularly sweep and clear debris and dirt as well as snow from your pavers. By keeping them clean, you will prevent any surface damage or scratching. (If you have a leaf or snow blower, then you’re in luck!)

Remove Stains

It is inevitable that at any point in time, your pavers will become stained due to weather and other conditions. Most stains can be washed off with a hose, however, for tougher stains try taking a brush and warm soapy water to the area. If neither of these methods work, try mixing one part vinegar with ten parts warm water and applying it to the stain; soaking the area for about 10 to 15 minutes. If the stain is from oil, try to remove it immediately. The longer a stain sits, the more difficult it will be to remove it from the surface of the stones.

Wash Pavers Regularly

It is also recommended that regardless of whether there are stains or not, you should clean your pavers with soapy water at least twice a year. If you choose to use a power washer, make sure to hold the hose at an angle as to prevent wearing down the pavers.

Control Weeds and Moss

In preparation for the winter months, use a weed spray during the spring and summer months when most weeds are in the growing phase. This will help prevent any further growth of weeds, moss, or algae between stones.

Note: Extreme cold or weather conditions can cause pavers to warp, and it is important to consider this when choosing which pavers to install and how easily they can be replaced.
